Table C-02-AO reports occupied-unit counts in thousands across nine square-footage categories. Humanlytic cumulatively sums 122.317 million units with reported size; 10.914 million “not reported” units are excluded. Published median: 1,500 ft²; mean: 1,809 ft².
What this calculator measures
See how your home size compares with a relevant reference population. The comparison uses the reference population and evidence identified on this page.
How to interpret your result
A percentile describes the approximate percentage of the stated reference population with a lower value. When a source supports only categories, medians, or averages, Humanlytic shows that broader comparison instead of inventing an exact percentile.
How this works
Evidence quality
Calculated from survey data
Method
Humanlytic places the converted square footage into the 2023 AHS Table C-02-AO category and cumulatively sums complete lower categories among occupied units with reported size. It does not distribute homes uniformly within a category.
Data source
U.S. Census Bureau — 2023 American Housing Survey, Table C-02-AO
Limitations
AHS publishes nine square-footage categories rather than exact unit-level percentiles. Humanlytic returns the cumulative percentile range for the selected category and excludes the 10.914 million occupied units whose size was not reported. No within-category distribution is assumed.
